Accart, Jean A French flying ace during World War II who was commandant of Escadrille GC 1/5 and claimed 71 victories during the Battle Of France. While recovering he wrote 'Chasseurs du Ciel' ('Hunter in the Sky'), an account of his wartime actions.1
Military - Army
Altmayer, Marie-Robert A French army general who was reactivated in 1940, by General Weygand and appointed on May 24 as commander of 10th army. He tried to hold a front on the Seine, until June 14, before delivering delaying battles onto the Loire and was captured June 19, 1940.1
Billotte, Gaston-Henri A French Officer who was Commander in Chief of the 1st Army Group based in northern France and had a central role in the failure of the French Army in the Battle of France.1
Blanchard, Georges Maurice Jean A French military officer who commanded the French 1st Army during the Battle of France. The french blocking force in Belgium contributed to the evacuation of Dunkirk.1
Condé, Charles-Marie A French army general who was the head of the 3rd French army at the Battle of France in 1940 until June 20, 1940 when he was taken into captivity until 11 May 1945.1
Corap, André Georges A French General who commanded the 9th Army which was placed to cover the Ardennes forest during the German attack in 1940. He was held responsible for the German breakthrough by the French high command and relieved from his post on 19 May 1940.1
De Gaulle, Charles André Joseph Marie A French general, writer and statesman who was the leader of Free France during WW2 and the head of the Provisional Government of the French Republic (1944–46). In 1958, he founded the Fifth Republic and was elected as the 18th President of France, until his resignation in 1969.1
Foch, Marshal Ferdinand A French soldier, military theorist and the Commander-in-Chief of the allied armies during the first world war.1
Gamelin, Maurice Gustave A French General who was the Supreme commander of the allied forces during the Battle of France until 18 may 1940 when he was replaced by Maxime Weygand. He is viewed as being partly responsible for the defeat.1
Georges, Alphonse Joseph A French officer who was Commander in Chief of the North East front during the Battle of France. He did not get on with Gamelin and apposed his strategy.1
Giraud, Henri Honoré A French General who commanded the French 7th army in the Netherlands. He became known in France for his escape from Königstein Castle, the high security POW camp.2
Hauteclocque, Philippe François Marie Leclerc de A French general who fought in the Battle of France and then in Equatorial Africa he rallied local leaders to the Free French cause. The forces under his command, known as L Force, campaigned in Libya in 1943, covered the Eighth Army’s inland flank during its advance into Tunisia, and participated in the attack on the Mareth Line.1
Mittelhauser, Eugène A French general who in May, 1940 was the commander of the French Eastern Mediterranean theatre of operations including the French forces stationed in Lebanon and Syria and the Balkan theatre.1
Noguès, Charles A French general of WW2. In 1942 he was resident general of France in Morocco, under the authority of General Juin, commander of French forces in French North Africa from 1939 to 1943.1
Pétain, Henri Philippe Benoni Omer A French general who attained the position of Marshal of France during WW1 when he led the French Army to victory at the Battle of Verdun, during which he became known as The Lion of Verdun. From 1940 to 1944, during WW2, he served as head of the collaborationist regime of Vichy France. After the war, Pétain was tried and convicted for treason and sentenced to life in prison.1
Pétain, Henri Philippe Benoni Omer Joseph A French general who was Marshal of France, and later Chief of State of Vichy France from 1940 to 1944. In June 1940, he was appointed Premier of France, and the Cabinet made peace with Germany. His government transformed France into an authoritarian regime and after the war, he was tried and convicted for treason.1
Prioux, René Jacques Adolphe A French General who commanded the French Cavalry Corps of light tanks and later the 1st army after General Blanchard had been promoted to replace General Bilotte as commander of the First Army Group.1
Weygand, Maxime A French military commander who replaced Maurice Gamelin as commander of the allied forces in late May 1940. After some vain attempts to contain the enemy offensive, he then joined in seeking an armistice and cooperation with the German occupiers.3
Military - Navy
Abrial, Jean-Marie Charles A French Admiral and Naval Minister. He worked in cooperation with the British troops during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.1
Levasseur, Jean An Officer of the Free French Navy who commanded ships that participated in the Escort Groups during the battle for the Atlantic, in particular, the Flower class corvette Aconit. He later participated in the Normandy invasion in the frigate Surprise.1
Political
Daladier, Édouard A French politician and the Prime Minister of France at the start of the Second World War. In March 1940, Daladier resigned because of his failure to aid Finland’s defence during the Winter War, and was replaced with Paul Reynaud.1
Laval, Pierre Jean Marie A French politician. He served as Prime Minister of France from 27 Jan 1931 to 20 Feb 1932, and a second time from 7 Jun 1935 to 24 Jan 1936. During WW2 he served in prominent roles in Philippe Pétain's Vichy Regime, as the vice-president of the Council of Ministers, and later as the head of government. He was executed by firing squad in October 1945.1
Lebrun, Albert François A French politician who was the last President of the French Third Republic from 1932 to 1940. He was captured on 27 August 1943 by the Germans and sent into captivity at the Itter Castle in Tyrol.1
Reynaud,Paul A French politician, noted for his stances on militant opposition to Germany. He was the penultimate Prime Minister of the Third Republic.2
