Manpower, The Story of Britain's Mobilisation for War

logo

This book describes how Britain's workforce was tranformed to match the requirements of a war-time economy. It describes how emergency legistration was enacted to effectively make Britain into a form of man-power dictatorship to allow the workforce to be fully controlled to use the people in the most efficient way for the needs of the country. It was carried out with full agreement of all parties including the Unions in a way that attempted to fit into the existing democratic principles of the country in regard to fairness, welfare and wages. An open-ended regulation, number 58A, allowed for any number of future statutary orders to be issued to control any aspects of man-power in any way that the government wished.

It gives encouragement to the public when it says, "Before this world war is over, many thousands more must make their gift of blood. One out of every ten men wounded will need blood given by civilians in Britain; and thousands of lives will be saved."

logo

War brings many changes. It has even changed the familiar quotation, "The little more and how much it is." To-day we must all make do with the little less. And how much that is (or would be if each one of us played his part) in terms of ships and shells, machine-power and man-power gained for the war effort, Mr. Reed and Fougasse are going to show you.

The Aircraft Builders An Account of British Aircraft Production 1935-1945.

logo

Not long ago an enthusiastic foreign writer described the building up of Britain's air power during the war years as "a miracle." The remark was well meant but, to the Britisher, it misses the point. The most interesting thing about the development of British air power is that it was not a miracle. The story of aircraft production in this country during the last few years is a story of Britain at its best and the British genius at its highest and most characteristic.

The Mediterranean Fleet, Greece to Tripoli. The Admiralty Account of Naval Operations: April 1941 to January 1943

logo

This book continues the story of the Royal Navy begun in 'East of Malta, West of Suez'. It opens in April, 1941. The Italian Fleet was then greatly weakened by the losses inflicted at Taranto and Matapan, but this did not deter the Germans from proceeding with their plan to capture Suez aud dominate the entire Mediterranean. During the next eighteen months the Navy, although never ceasing to attack the enemy supply lines to Libya, fought on the defensive and against heavy odds. The withdrawals from Greece and Crete, the supplying of the armies in the desert and of the besieged garrisons of Tobruk and Malta, were its main tasks in a situation which became steadily more serious until, in October, 1942, the Allied forces were strong enough to take the initiative and begin the advance that eventually drove the enemy from Africa. The story concludes in January, 1943, when Tripoli fell into our hands and the Navy again assumed command of the great supply route through the Mediterranean.

The Battle of the Atlantic, The Official Account of the Fight Against The U-Boats, 1939 - 1945

logo

For the space of sixty-eight months the Battle of the Atlantic raged with ruthless but varying intensity. It started with the sinking of the Athenia west of Ireland less than twelve hours after the outbreak of war on September 3rd, 1939, ended with Grand-Admiral Dönitz's signal of May 4th, 1945, ordering his U-boats to cease hostilities and return to base, followed four days later by the unconditional surrender of Germany. The narrative that follows does not pretend to give a full and detailed account of the Battle of the Atlantic, it is merely the abbreviated story of a few of the more important highlights in the several phases of a ruthless and protracted campaign which, but for the grace of God, might well have brought about not merely the defeat of Britain and the disruption of the British Empire, but the eventual Axis domination of the world.

Atlantic Bridge, The Official Account of R.A.F Transport Commands Ocean Ferry

logo

This book described the story of the people and organisation that was created early in world war II to bring newly created aircraft from the United States and Canada across the Atlantic into the European and African theatres to support the Allies. The Army At War. The Defence of Calais. (Erik Linklater)

logo

This is an interim report. The whole story of the defence of Calais will never be told, because much of it was enacted by little groups of men who, with no witness but the enemy, fought till they were killed. But many survived the action and are now prisoners of war. Some day they will tell, more fully and more accurately than I have done, the story of Calais.

The Army At War. The Destruction of an Army. The First Campaign in Libya. Sept 1940-Feb 1941

logo

The campaign described in this book was the first example of a desert war between two fully mechanised armies. The nature of the country presented special problems - great distances, lack of water, and absence of cover - but its very size and featurelessness offered the fullest advantages to the army possessing superior mobility. This book will help you to understand the course of the campaign itself, and the conditions in which it was fought among the gigantic background of desert. The maps have been coloured to make them clearer.

The Army at War. They sought Out Rommel. A Diary of the Libyan Campaign

logo

This book is a diary, kept from Nov. 16th to Dec. 31st, 1941, by a Public Relations Officer whose job it was to conduct a party of newspaper correspondents into battle. It includes some maps to illustrate the phases which have been enhanced with colour to make them clearer. One of his party writes: 'I saw' are fine words for the newspaper man ... This time we certainly saw ...; saw Rommel's tank force charging our positions at Sidi Omar and destroyed by a handful of British gunners; saw thousands of vehicles charging into Libya like destroyers in smoke-screens; saw the link with Tobruk decisively established, saw the Poles beginning to redress their wrongs; saw the Indian Brigade chase the enemy fifty miles in one day; saw the shambles on Derna aerodrome; saw the entry into Benghazi. And that our little party of war correspondents was able to see what watching civilisation so hungrily desired to read was largely due to the zeal, foresight, courage and energy of our conducting officer, Captain Sean Fielding of the Green Howards, the writer of this diary.

The Army At War. Highland Division

logo

This book charts the progress of the 51st Highland Division in France during 1940 from their initial deployment on the Maginot Line in the east of France, their move west to join the main Battle of France and finally the eventual surrender of two of the three Brigades at St Valéry-en-Caux. They were much admired by General De Gaulle who said on 20th June 1942 at Edinburth. 'I can tell you that the comradeship in arms experienced on the battlefield of Abbeville in May and June 1940 between the French Armoured Division, which I had the honour to command, and the valiant 51st Highland Division under General Fortune, played its part in the decision which I took to continue fighting on the side of the Allies unto the end no matter what may be the course of events'.

The Army at War. The Campaign in Greece and Crete. (David Garnett)

logo

The campaign described in this book will occupy a proud place in the story of the British and Imperial armies' exploits in this war. The introductory chapter explains on what grounds - of national honour as well as long-term strategy - the decision to support the Greeks was taken, and the remaining chapters describe in detail the heroic rearguard action, first down the length of the Greek peninsula and then across the mountains of Crete, in which the campaign for the most part consisted.

The Army At War. The Northern Garrisons. (By Eric Linklater)

logo

This book describes the authors visit to the northern island ports of Orkney, Shetlands, The Faeroes and Iceland and in doing so highlights the significance of these garrisons to the overall strategy of the Battle of the Atlantic. It provides a good indication of the nature of Iceland, the daily lives of the garrisoned men, the character of the local people and how the occupation of Iceland effected the country. It also shows a distinction between the Soldiers who played a critical role in preventing invasion but are desperate to see the enemy, as against the RAF who providing an obvious direct assistance to the convoys and thus invaluable service to the Battle of the Atlantic.
