An airborne officer of the British Army During WW2 who commanded the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment and was active at Bruneval, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and the Netherlands. He is best known for leading the battalion that held the bridge at Arnhem against overwhelming odds until running out of ammunition. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Order as well as the Military Cross for his actions in the field and after WW2 he served as General Officer Commanding Malta and Libya before his retirement. |
