Description A Senior Royal Navy officer who commanded many ships prior to WW1 including the destroyer HMS Broke, the cruisers HMS Weymouth/Danae/Kent and the Battleship HMS Royal Sovereign. During WW2, he was responsible for the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 and was the Allied Naval Commander-in-Chief Expeditionary Force from 1943, responsible for planning and commanding the naval forces in the invasion of France in 1944.
