Battalion A military unit typically consisting of 300 to 800 soldiers and divided into a number of companies. A battalion is typically commanded by a lieutenant colonel.9
Brigade A military formation that is typically composed of three to six battalions plus supporting elements. Three or more brigades constitute a division.7
Company A military unit, typically consisting of 80–250 soldiers and usually commanded by a major. Most companies are formed of three to six platoons and several companies are grouped to form a battalion or regiment, the latter of which is sometimes formed by several battalions.9
Corps A large military formation composed of two or more military divisions.6
Division A large military unit usually consisting of between 10,000 and 20,000 soldiers. A division is composed of several regiments or brigades. Several divisions typically make up a corps.12
Field army A military formation composed of two or more corps and may be subordinate to an army group.1
Garrison A collective term for a body of troops stationed in a particular location, originally to guard it, but now often simply using it as a home base.8
Light Aid Detachment An attached independent minor unit of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers or operating as a sub-unit of the supported unit. These units provide dedicated logistic support to every field unit of the British Army.2
Platoon A military unit typically composed of more than two sections and consisting of around 15 to 30 soldiers. A platoon is the smallest military unit led by a commissioned officer, typically a second or first lieutenant.4
Regiment A title used by some military units. The size of a regiment varies markedly. Each separate Battalion of a regiment is typically allocated to a specific Brigade for active formations.6
